Proverbs 7-9
SCRIPTURE:
Passage: Proverbs 7
¹ My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.
² Keep my commandments, and live; and my law as the apple of thine eye.
³ Bind them upon thy fingers, write them upon the table of thine heart.
⁴ Say unto wisdom, Thou art my sister; and call understanding thy kinswoman:
⁵ That they may keep thee from the strange woman, from the stranger which flattereth with her words.
⁶ For at the window of my house I looked through my casement,
⁷ And beheld among the simple ones, I discerned among the youths, a young man void of understanding,
⁸ Passing through the street near her corner; and he went the way to her house,
⁹ In the twilight, in the evening, in the black and dark night:
¹⁰ And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart.
¹¹ (She is loud and stubborn; her feet abide not in her house:
¹² Now is she without, now in the streets, and lieth in wait at every corner.)
¹³ So she caught him, and kissed him, and with an impudent face said unto him,
¹⁴ I have peace offerings with me; this day have I payed my vows.
¹⁵ Therefore came I forth to meet thee, diligently to seek thy face, and I have found thee.
¹⁶ I have decked my bed with coverings of tapestry, with carved works, with fine linen of Egypt.
¹⁷ I have perfumed my bed with myrrh, aloes, and cinnamon.
¹⁸ Come, let us take our fill of love until the morning: let us solace ourselves with loves.
¹⁹ For the goodman is not at home, he is gone a long journey:
²⁰ He hath taken a bag of money with him, and will come home at the day appointed.
²¹ With her much fair speech she caused him to yield, with the flattering of her lips she forced him.
²² He goeth after her straightway, as an ox goeth to the slaughter, or as a fool to the correction of the stocks;
²³ Till a dart strike through his liver; as a bird hasteth to the snare, and knoweth not that it is for his life.
²⁴ Hearken unto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth.
²⁵ Let not thine heart decline to her ways, go not astray in her paths.
²⁶ For she hath cast down many wounded: yea, many strong men have been slain by her.
²⁷ Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death.
Passage: Proverbs 8
¹ Doth not wisdom cry? and understanding put forth her voice?
² She standeth in the top of high places, by the way in the places of the paths.
³ She crieth at the gates, at the entry of the city, at the coming in at the doors.
⁴ Unto you, O men, I call; and my voice is to the sons of man.
⁵ O ye simple, understand wisdom: and, ye fools, be ye of an understanding heart.
⁶ Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.
⁷ For my mouth shall speak truth; and wickedness is an abomination to my lips.
⁸ All the words of my mouth are in righteousness; there is nothing froward or perverse in them.
⁹ They are all plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge.
¹⁰ Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold.
¹¹ For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
¹² I wisdom dwell with prudence, and find out knowledge of witty inventions.
¹³ The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.
¹⁴ Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.
¹⁵ By me kings reign, and princes decree justice.
¹⁶ By me princes rule, and nobles, even all the judges of the earth.
¹⁷ I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me.
¹⁸ Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness.
¹⁹ My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver.
²⁰ I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment:
²¹ That I may cause those that love me to inherit substance; and I will fill their treasures.
²² The LORD possessed me in the beginning of his way, before his works of old.
²³ I was set up from everlasting, from the beginning, or ever the earth was.
²⁴ When there were no depths, I was brought forth; when there were no fountains abounding with water.
²⁵ Before the mountains were settled, before the hills was I brought forth:
²⁶ While as yet he had not made the earth, nor the fields, nor the highest part of the dust of the world.
²⁷ When he prepared the heavens, I was there: when he set a compass upon the face of the depth:
²⁸ When he established the clouds above: when he strengthened the fountains of the deep:
²⁹ When he gave to the sea his decree, that the waters should not pass his commandment: when he appointed the foundations of the earth:
³⁰ Then I was by him, as one brought up with him: and I was daily his delight, rejoicing always before him;
³¹ Rejoicing in the habitable part of his earth; and my delights were with the sons of men.
³² Now therefore hearken unto me, O ye children: for blessed are they that keep my ways.
³³ Hear instruction, and be wise, and refuse it not.
³⁴ Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors.
³⁵ For whoso findeth me findeth life, and shall obtain favour of the LORD.
³⁶ But he that sinneth against me wrongeth his own soul: all they that hate me love death.
Passage: Proverbs 9
¹ Wisdom hath builded her house, she hath hewn out her seven pillars:
² She hath killed her beasts; she hath mingled her wine; she hath also furnished her table.
³ She hath sent forth her maidens: she crieth upon the highest places of the city,
⁴ Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
⁵ Come, eat of my bread, and drink of the wine which I have mingled.
⁶ Forsake the foolish, and live; and go in the way of understanding.
⁷ He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.
⁸ Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
⁹ Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
¹⁰ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.
¹¹ For by me thy days shall be multiplied, and the years of thy life shall be increased.
¹² If thou be wise, thou shalt be wise for thyself: but if thou scornest, thou alone shalt bear it.
¹³ A foolish woman is clamorous: she is simple, and knoweth nothing.
¹⁴ For she sitteth at the door of her house, on a seat in the high places of the city,
¹⁵ To call passengers who go right on their ways:
¹⁶ Whoso is simple, let him turn in hither: and as for him that wanteth understanding, she saith to him,
¹⁷ Stolen waters are sweet, and bread eaten in secret is pleasant.
¹⁸ But he knoweth not that the dead are there; and that her guests are in the depths of hell.
DEVOTIONAL:
Proverbs 7 places us in a familiar battleground: the moment when temptation offers a story. The young man in the chapter is not dragged by chains; he is led by a persuasive voice that makes folly sound reasonable and sin sound safe. The passage forces us to see how foolishness works. It does not begin with a fall; it begins with a softened conscience and a heart that has stopped treasuring God’s commandments.
Proverbs is blunt that sexual sin is never only about sex. It is about covenant betrayal, about unfaithfulness of heart, and about ignoring the God who sees. The warnings are graphic because the danger is real. Wisdom is pictured as the kind of love that tells the truth before you lose everything. Folly flatters, but wisdom wounds in order to heal.
Then Proverbs 8 turns and personifies wisdom itself, speaking as if wisdom has been calling in public all along. Wisdom is not hidden for the spiritual elite; it cries at the gates where decisions are made. The chapter celebrates God’s wise ordering of creation and invites us to live in step with that order. In Israel’s worldview, wisdom is woven into God’s world because the world was made by God’s Word.
Proverbs 9 brings the contrast to a head with two meals. Lady Wisdom prepares a feast and invites the simple to come, learn, and live. Lady Folly also calls, but her bread is stolen and her end is death. The deciding hinge is fear of the LORD. Reverence for God is not a bonus feature; it is the compass that keeps desire from steering you into destruction.
Jesus the Messiah stands at the crossroads as the truest embodiment of wisdom’s invitation. He calls sinners to a table, not to celebrate their rebellion, but to forgive it and remake them. His cross exposes the lies of temptation, and His resurrection opens a new path of life. In Him we learn that wisdom is not merely avoiding disaster; it is learning to love God more than any forbidden sweetness.
In daily life, listen for the two invitations in your own routines. One will offer ease, secrecy, and self-justification; the other will call you into light, repentance, and patient obedience. Build habits that keep God’s words close, because you cannot outsmart temptation with willpower alone. In your church family, pursue honest discipleship where confession is normal and encouragement is practical.
In U.S. civic life, the virtue of discernment guards communities because deception rarely stays private. Pray for young people, for families navigating a sexualized culture, and for those working to rescue victims of exploitation. Christians should show up as people who protect the vulnerable, speak truth about sin without cruelty, and hold out the mercy of Christ to the repentant.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
How does Proverbs 7 show temptation working through persuasion rather than force?
What does it look like, practically, to keep God’s words close when you are tired or stressed?
Why is “the fear of the LORD” presented as the hinge between wisdom and folly?
How does Jesus’ invitation to His table reshape the way you respond to both sin and shame?
PRAYER:
ADORATION:
LORD, You are wise in all Your works and pure in all Your ways. You see perfectly, and You call sinners into light with both truth and mercy.
CONFESSION:
I confess the moments I have listened to flattering lies and treated sin as a secret pleasure instead of a deadly poison. Forgive me for the times I have made excuses rather than fleeing.
THANKSGIVING:
Thank You that Your wisdom calls openly and that Your grace is stronger than my weakness. Thank You for Jesus, who welcomes the repentant and gives power to walk in newness of life.
SUPPLICATION – GENERAL:
Strengthen my heart to fear You and to love what You love. Give me discernment, clean desires, and courage to cut off what leads me toward darkness. Surround me with wise friends who will speak truth to me.
SUPPLICATION – U.S. / CIVIC:
Protect the young, expose exploitation, and rescue those trapped in abuse. Give wisdom to parents, educators, pastors, and public servants who confront these evils. Make Your people a safe refuge marked by holiness and compassion.

SCRIPTURE:
Passage: Proverbs 4
¹ Hear, ye children, the instruction of a father, and attend to know understanding.
² For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.
³ For I was my father's son, tender and only beloved in the sight of my mother.
⁴ He taught me also, and said unto me, Let thine heart retain my words: keep my commandments, and live.
⁵ Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.
⁶ Forsake her not, and she shall preserve thee: love her, and she shall keep thee.
⁷ Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.
⁸ Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.
⁹ She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee.
¹⁰ Hear, O my son, and receive my sayings; and the years of thy life shall be many.
¹¹ I have taught thee in the way of wisdom; I have led thee in right paths.
¹² When thou goest, thy steps shall not be straitened; and when thou runnest, thou shalt not stumble.
¹³ Take fast hold of instruction; let her not go: keep her; for she is thy life.
¹⁴ Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men.
¹⁵ Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.
¹⁶ For they sleep not, except they have done mischief; and their sleep is taken away, unless they cause some to fall.
¹⁷ For they eat the bread of wickedness, and drink the wine of violence.
¹⁸ But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.
¹⁹ The way of the wicked is as darkness: they know not at what they stumble.
²⁰ My son, attend to my words; incline thine ear unto my sayings.
²¹ Let them not depart from thine eyes; keep them in the midst of thine heart.
²² For they are life unto those that find them, and health to all their flesh.
²³ Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.
²⁴ Put away from thee a froward mouth, and perverse lips put far from thee.
²⁵ Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.
²⁶ Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established.
²⁷ Turn not to the right hand nor to the left: remove thy foot from evil.
Passage: Proverbs 5
¹ My son, attend unto my wisdom, and bow thine ear to my understanding:
² That thou mayest regard discretion, and that thy lips may keep knowledge.
³ For the lips of a strange woman drop as an honeycomb, and her mouth is smoother than oil:
⁴ But her end is bitter as wormwood, sharp as a two-edged sword.
⁵ Her feet go down to death; her steps take hold on hell.
⁶ Lest thou shouldest ponder the path of life, her ways are moveable, that thou canst not know them.
⁷ Hear me now therefore, O ye children, and depart not from the words of my mouth.
⁸ Remove thy way far from her, and come not nigh the door of her house:
⁹ Lest thou give thine honour unto others, and thy years unto the cruel:
¹⁰ Lest strangers be filled with thy wealth; and thy labours be in the house of a stranger;
¹¹ And thou mourn at the last, when thy flesh and thy body are consumed,
¹² And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;
¹³ And have not obeyed the voice of my teachers, nor inclined mine ear to them that instructed me!
¹⁴ I was almost in all evil in the midst of the congregation and assembly.
¹⁵ Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.
¹⁶ Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets.
¹⁷ Let them be only thine own, and not strangers' with thee.
¹⁸ Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.
¹⁹ Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.
²⁰ And why wilt thou, my son, be ravished with a strange woman, and embrace the bosom of a stranger?
²¹ For the ways of man are before the eyes of the LORD, and he pondereth all his goings.
²² His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.
²³ He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.
Passage: Proverbs 6
¹ My son, if thou be surety for thy friend, if thou hast stricken thy hand with a stranger,
² Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.
³ Do this now, my son, and deliver thyself, when thou art come into the hand of thy friend; go, humble thyself, and make sure thy friend.
⁴ Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.
⁵ Deliver thyself as a roe from the hand of the hunter, and as a bird from the hand of the fowler.
⁶ Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise:
⁷ Which having no guide, overseer, or ruler,
⁸ Provideth her meat in the summer, and gathereth her food in the harvest.
⁹ How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep?
¹⁰ Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep:
¹¹ So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man.
¹² A naughty person, a wicked man, walketh with a froward mouth.
¹³ He winketh with his eyes, he speaketh with his feet, he teacheth with his fingers;
¹⁴ Frowardness is in his heart, he deviseth mischief continually; he soweth discord.
¹⁵ Therefore shall his calamity come suddenly; suddenly shall he be broken without remedy.
¹⁶ These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him:
¹⁷ A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood,
¹⁸ An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,
¹⁹ A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.
²⁰ My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
²¹ Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.
²² When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleepest, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee.
²³ For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
²⁴ To keep thee from the evil woman, from the flattery of the tongue of a strange woman.
²⁵ Lust not after her beauty in thine heart; neither let her take thee with her eyelids.
²⁶ For by means of a whorish woman a man is brought to a piece of bread: and the adultress will hunt for the precious life.
²⁷ Can a man take fire in his bosom, and his clothes not be burned?
²⁸ Can one go upon hot coals, and his feet not be burned?
²⁹ So he that goeth in to his neighbour's wife; whosoever toucheth her shall not be innocent.
³⁰ Men do not despise a thief, if he steal to satisfy his soul when he is hungry;
³¹ But if he be found, he shall restore sevenfold; he shall give all the substance of his house.
³² But whoso committeth adultery with a woman lacketh understanding: he that doeth it destroyeth his own soul.
³³ A wound and dishonour shall he get; and his reproach shall not be wiped away.
³⁴ For jealousy is the rage of a man: therefore he will not spare in the day of vengeance.
³⁵ He will not regard any ransom; neither will he rest content, though thou givest many gifts.
DEVOTIONAL:
Proverbs 4 begins with a word that feels almost urgent: keep your heart. The book does not treat the heart as a sentimental organ; it treats it as the control center of a life. From it flow the issues of living, meaning the direction of your choices, the shape of your desires, and the tone of your words. Wisdom therefore does not start with polishing the surface. It starts with guarding what feeds the inner person.
The chapters paint life as a road. There is a path of the just that grows brighter, and there is a way of the wicked that trips in darkness. That imagery is deeply covenantal: Israel’s faith has always been about walking with the LORD. To walk with Him is to avoid certain places, certain habits, certain companions, and certain lies that promise freedom while quietly training you to love chains.
Proverbs 5 and 6 speak with plain seriousness about sexual sin, not because God is anti-pleasure, but because He is pro-life for the soul. Adultery is pictured as sweetness that turns to bitterness, as a path that steals honor and robs years. This is wisdom as mercy. Scripture refuses to flatter the fantasies that destroy families and hollow out worship, because God’s commands are meant to protect covenant faithfulness.
Then Proverbs turns to ordinary work and ordinary speech. The ant becomes a teacher, exposing how laziness is not only a scheduling issue but a heart issue. The list of things the LORD hates includes pride, lying, violence, and sowing discord, showing that “small” sins are not small to God when they poison a community. Wisdom reaches from bedroom to workplace to neighborhood conversations.
Jesus is the One who walked the bright path without stumbling. He was pure in body, truthful in speech, diligent in calling, and peace-making in conflict. When He calls us to follow Him, He is not inviting us into self-improvement but into a new way of life empowered by grace. The Spirit writes God’s wisdom on the heart so that obedience becomes the fruit of a changed desire.
In daily life, be honest about what you allow into your heart through screens, jokes, grudges, and private daydreams. Choose habits that make the path of righteousness easier to walk, not harder. Let your work be an act of worship, and let your home be a place where speech builds up rather than tears down. In the church, pursue peace with courage, refusing to spread suspicion and learning to address conflict with truth and love.
In U.S. civic life, the virtue of integrity strengthens communities because corruption often grows from unchecked private habits. Pray for workplaces, families, and leaders to be marked by honesty, diligence, and purity. Christians should show up as people whose quiet faithfulness makes trust possible, whether in business, education, public service, or neighborhood life.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
What do you think it means to “keep thy heart,” and what threatens your heart most right now?
How do these chapters connect private purity and public peace in a way that challenges you?
Where have you been tempted to treat laziness or careless speech as harmless?
How does following Jesus change the goal of obedience from self-made righteousness to Spirit-formed holiness?
PRAYER:
ADORATION:
God of light, Your ways are straight and good. You are holy without harshness, and Your commands are wise protection for Your people.
CONFESSION:
I confess the ways I have allowed my heart to drift, excusing what should have been resisted and feeding desires that do not honor You. Forgive me and cleanse me.
THANKSGIVING:
Thank You for warning me before ruin arrives, and for the grace that meets me when I repent. Thank You for Jesus, who walks with sinners and makes them new.
SUPPLICATION – GENERAL:
Guard my heart by Your Spirit. Give me self-control, purity, and diligence. Teach me to speak words that heal, and make me quick to pursue peace where I have contributed to discord.
SUPPLICATION – U.S. / CIVIC:
Strengthen integrity in our workplaces, schools, and public offices. Expose fraud, restrain violence, and protect families from destructive temptations. Make Your church a bright witness of holiness and reconciliation.

Passage: Proverbs 1
¹ The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;
² To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;
³ To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;
⁴ To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.
⁵ A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:
⁶ To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.
⁷ The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.
⁸ My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:
⁹ For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.
¹⁰ My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.
¹¹ If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:
¹² Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:
¹³ We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:
¹⁴ Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:
¹⁵ My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:
¹⁶ For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.
¹⁷ Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
¹⁸ And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.
¹⁹ So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.
²⁰ Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:
²¹ She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,
²² How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?
²³ Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.
²⁴ Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;
²⁵ But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:
²⁶ I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;
²⁷ When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.
²⁸ Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:
²⁹ For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD:
³⁰ They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.
³¹ Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.
³² For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.
³³ But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.
Passage: Proverbs 2
¹ My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee;
² So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding;
³ Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding;
⁴ If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures;
⁵ Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.
⁶ For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.
⁷ He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly.
⁸ He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints.
⁹ Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path.
¹⁰ When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul;
¹¹ Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee:
¹² To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;
¹³ Who leave the paths of uprightness, to walk in the ways of darkness;
¹⁴ Who rejoice to do evil, and delight in the frowardness of the wicked;
¹⁵ Whose ways are crooked, and they froward in their paths:
¹⁶ To deliver thee from the strange woman, even from the stranger which flattereth with her words;
¹⁷ Which forsaketh the guide of her youth, and forgetteth the covenant of her God.
¹⁸ For her house inclineth unto death, and her paths unto the dead.
¹⁹ None that go unto her return again, neither take they hold of the paths of life.
²⁰ That thou mayest walk in the way of good men, and keep the paths of the righteous.
²¹ For the upright shall dwell in the land, and the perfect shall remain in it.
²² But the wicked shall be cut off from the earth, and the transgressors shall be rooted out of it.
Passage: Proverbs 3
¹ My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:
² For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.
³ Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:
⁴ So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.
⁵ Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
⁶ In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
⁷ Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil.
⁸ It shall be health to thy navel, and marrow to thy bones.
⁹ Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:
¹⁰ So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.
¹¹ My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:
¹² For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.
¹³ Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding.
¹⁴ For the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold.
¹⁵ She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
¹⁶ Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.
¹⁷ Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.
¹⁸ She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her: and happy is every one that retaineth her.
¹⁹ The LORD by wisdom hath founded the earth; by understanding hath he established the heavens.
²⁰ By his knowledge the depths are broken up, and the clouds drop down the dew.
²¹ My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion:
²² So shall they be life unto thy soul, and grace to thy neck.
²³ Then shalt thou walk in thy way safely, and thy foot shall not stumble.
²⁴ When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid: yea, thou shalt lie down, and thy sleep shall be sweet.
²⁵ Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.
²⁶ For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.
²⁷ Withhold not good from them to whom it is due, when it is in the power of thine hand to do it.
²⁸ Say not unto thy neighbour, Go, and come again, and to morrow I will give; when thou hast it by thee.
²⁹ Devise not evil against thy neighbour, seeing he dwelleth securely by thee.
³⁰ Strive not with a man without cause, if he have done thee no harm.
³¹ Envy thou not the oppressor, and choose none of his ways.
³² For the froward is abomination to the LORD: but his secret is with the righteous.
³³ The curse of the LORD is in the house of the wicked: but he blesseth the habitation of the just.
³⁴ Surely he scorneth the scorners: but he giveth grace unto the lowly.
³⁵ The wise shall inherit glory: but shame shall be the promotion of fools.
DEVOTIONAL:
Proverbs opens like a father taking a son by the shoulder and saying, “Listen carefully.” These first chapters are not abstract philosophy; they are covenant instruction aimed at forming a life. Solomon presents wisdom as something you can either receive or refuse, as if it stands at the threshold of your day waiting to be welcomed. The stakes are not small, because Proverbs treats choices as seeds that grow into character, habits, and eventually destiny.
The “fear of the LORD” is the front door of wisdom. This fear is not panic; it is reverent submission, the kind of awe that makes a person teachable. In Israel’s story, fearing the LORD means remembering that you live before the God who redeemed you, who speaks, who judges, and who keeps covenant. That is why Proverbs warns against quick gain, violent companions, and the seductive pull of belonging to the wrong crowd. Wisdom begins by refusing to pretend that sin is harmless.
These chapters also keep tying wisdom to covenant virtues: mercy and truth around the neck, the law written on the heart, a steady trust that does not lean on its own understanding. The language echoes the Torah’s call to love the LORD wholeheartedly and to keep His words close. Wisdom is not a rival to God’s commands; it is the skill of obeying them with gladness. Even discipline is portrayed as love, because a Father who corrects is a Father who refuses to abandon His child.
Proverbs then turns our attention to the LORD who directs paths. We are told to trust Him with the whole heart, to acknowledge Him in all ways, and to receive His direction as a gift. That is a direct challenge to the modern myth that freedom means self-definition. Scripture calls it wisdom to submit our plans to God, because our understanding is partial and our hearts are easily biased in our own favor.
Jesus the Messiah embodies the wisdom Proverbs describes. He is the Son who listens perfectly, the Teacher who walks the straight path, and the Wisdom of God given to us by grace. Proverbs does not save us by moral improvement; it exposes our need for a new heart. In Christ, the fear of the LORD becomes the beginning of a life that is not merely well-managed, but truly transformed.
In daily life, treat wisdom as something you practice, not something you admire. Let your mornings begin with a posture of reverence, and let your decisions be shaped by Scripture more than by impulse. In parenting, resist both harshness and laziness, choosing patient instruction that aims at the heart. In the church, pursue counsel and accountability, because the wise do not pretend they are self-sufficient.
In U.S. civic life, the virtue of teachability matters because a proud people becomes an easily manipulated people. Pray for schools, families, and churches to form young hearts in truth rather than in cynicism. Christians should show up as learners under God’s Word who can speak with clarity and kindness in a confused culture.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
How would you describe the fear of the LORD in your own words, and where do you see it lacking in your life?
What kinds of voices or friendships most tempt you to “consent” to sin rather than resist it?
How does Proverbs 3 challenge the way you plan and make decisions?
What difference does it make that Jesus is not only wise but is God’s wisdom given for your salvation?

SCRIPTURE:
Passage: Song of Solomon 1
¹ The song of songs, which is Solomon's.
² Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine.
³ Because of the savour of thy good ointments thy name is as ointment poured forth, therefore do the virgins love thee.
⁴ Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.
⁵ I am black, but comely, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon.
⁶ Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me: my mother's children were angry with me; they made me the keeper of the vineyards; but mine own vineyard have I not kept.
⁷ Tell me, O thou whom my soul loveth, where thou feedest, where thou makest thy flock to rest at noon: for why should I be as one that turneth aside by the flocks of thy companions?
⁸ If thou know not, O thou fairest among women, go thy way forth by the footsteps of the flock, and feed thy kids beside the shepherds' tents.
⁹ I have compared thee, O my love, to a company of horses in Pharaoh's chariots.
¹⁰ Thy cheeks are comely with rows of jewels, thy neck with chains of gold.
¹¹ We will make thee borders of gold with studs of silver.
¹² While the king sitteth at his table, my spikenard sendeth forth the smell thereof.
¹³ A bundle of myrrh is my well-beloved unto me; he shall lie all night betwixt my breasts.
¹⁴ My beloved is unto me as a cluster of camphire in the vineyards of Engedi.
¹⁵ Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves' eyes.
¹⁶ Behold, thou art fair, my beloved, yea, pleasant: also our bed is green.
¹⁷ The beams of our house are cedar, and our rafters of fir.
Passage: Song of Solomon 2
¹ I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.
² As the lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters.
³ As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste.
⁴ He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love.
⁵ Stay me with flagons, comfort me with apples: for I am sick of love.
⁶ His left hand is under my head, and his right hand doth embrace me.
⁷ I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.
⁸ The voice of my beloved! behold, he cometh leaping upon the mountains, skipping upon the hills.
⁹ My beloved is like a roe or a young hart: behold, he standeth behind our wall, he looketh forth at the windows, shewing himself through the lattice.
¹⁰ My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away.
¹¹ For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone;
¹² The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;
¹³ The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.
¹⁴ O my dove, that art in the clefts of the rock, in the secret places of the stairs, let me see thy countenance, let me hear thy voice; for sweet is thy voice, and thy countenance is comely.
¹⁵ Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines: for our vines have tender grapes.
¹⁶ My beloved is mine, and I am his: he feedeth among the lilies.
¹⁷ Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, turn, my beloved, and be thou like a roe or a young hart upon the mountains of Bether.
Passage: Song of Solomon 3
¹ By night on my bed I sought him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.
² I will rise now, and go about the city in the streets, and in the broad ways I will seek him whom my soul loveth: I sought him, but I found him not.
³ The watchmen that go about the city found me: to whom I said, Saw ye him whom my soul loveth?
⁴ It was but a little that I passed from them, but I found him whom my soul loveth: I held him, and would not let him go, until I had brought him into my mother's house, and into the chamber of her that conceived me.
⁵ I charge you, O ye daughters of Jerusalem, by the roes, and by the hinds of the field, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, till he please.
⁶ Who is this that cometh out of the wilderness like pillars of smoke, perfumed with myrrh and frankincense, with all powders of the merchant?
⁷ Behold his bed, which is Solomon's; threescore valiant men are about it, of the valiant of Israel.
⁸ They all hold swords, being expert in war: every man hath his sword upon his thigh because of fear in the night.
⁹ King Solomon made himself a chariot of the wood of Lebanon.
¹⁰ He made the pillars thereof of silver, the bottom thereof of gold, the covering of it of purple, the midst thereof being paved with love, for the daughters of Jerusalem.
¹¹ Go forth, O ye daughters of Zion, and behold king Solomon with the crown wherewith his mother crowned him in the day of his espousals, and in the day of the gladness of his heart.
Passage: Song of Solomon 4
¹ Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold, thou art fair; thou hast doves' eyes within thy locks: thy hair is as a flock of goats, that appear from mount Gilead.
² Thy teeth are like a flock of sheep that are even shorn, which came up from the washing; whereof every one bear twins, and none is barren among them.
³ Thy lips are like a thread of scarlet, and thy speech is comely: thy temples are like a piece of a pomegranate within thy locks.
⁴ Thy neck is like the tower of David builded for an armoury, whereon there hang a thousand bucklers, all shields of mighty men.
⁵ Thy two breasts are like two young roes that are twins, which feed among the lilies.
⁶ Until the day break, and the shadows flee away, I will get me to the mountain of myrrh, and to the hill of frankincense.
⁷ Thou art all fair, my love; there is no spot in thee.
⁸ Come with me from Lebanon, my spouse, with me from Lebanon: look from the top of Amana, from the top of Shenir and Hermon, from the lions' dens, from the mountains of the leopards.
⁹ Thou hast ravished my heart, my sister, my spouse; thou hast ravished my heart with one of thine eyes, with one chain of thy neck.
¹⁰ How fair is thy love, my sister, my spouse! how much better is thy love than wine! and the smell of thine ointments than all spices!
¹¹ Thy lips, O my spouse, drop as the honeycomb: honey and milk are under thy tongue; and the smell of thy garments is like the smell of Lebanon.
¹² A garden inclosed is my sister, my spouse; a spring shut up, a fountain sealed.
¹³ Thy plants are an orchard of pomegranates, with pleasant fruits; camphire, with spikenard,
¹⁴ Spikenard and saffron; calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of frankincense; myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices:
¹⁵ A fountain of gardens, a well of living waters, and streams from Lebanon.
¹⁶ Awake, O north wind; and come, thou south; blow upon my garden, that the spices thereof may flow out. Let my beloved come into his garden, and eat his pleasant fruits.
Passage: Song of Solomon 5
¹ I am come into my garden, my sister, my spouse: I have gathered my myrrh with my spice; I have eaten my honeycomb with my honey; I have drunk my wine with my milk: eat, O friends; drink, yea, drink abundantly, O beloved.
² I sleep, but my heart waketh: it is the voice of my beloved that knocketh, saying, Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my undefiled: for my head is filled with dew, and my locks with the drops of the night.
³ I have put off my coat; how shall I put it on? I have washed my feet; how shall I defile them?
⁴ My beloved put in his hand by the hole of the door, and my bowels were moved for him.
⁵ I rose up to open to my beloved; and my hands dropped with myrrh, and my fingers with sweet smelling myrrh, upon the handles of the lock.
⁶ I opened to my beloved; but my beloved had withdrawn himself, and was gone: my soul failed when he spake: I sought him, but I could not find him; I called him, but he gave me no answer.
⁷ The watchmen that went about the city found me, they smote me, they wounded me; the keepers of the walls took away my veil from me.
⁸ I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, if ye find my beloved, that ye tell him, that I am sick of love.
⁹ What is thy beloved more than another beloved, O thou fairest among women? what is thy beloved more than another beloved, that thou dost so charge us?
¹⁰ My beloved is white and ruddy, the chiefest among ten thousand.
¹¹ His head is as the most fine gold, his locks are bushy, and black as a raven.
¹² His eyes are as the eyes of doves by the rivers of waters, washed with milk, and fitly set.
¹³ His cheeks are as a bed of spices, as sweet flowers: his lips like lilies, dropping sweet smelling myrrh.
¹⁴ His hands are as gold rings set with the beryl: his belly is as bright ivory overlaid with sapphires.
¹⁵ His legs are as pillars of marble, set upon sockets of fine gold: his countenance is as Lebanon, excellent as the cedars.
¹⁶ His mouth is most sweet: yea, he is altogether lovely. This is my beloved, and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem.
Passage: Song of Solomon 6
¹ Whither is thy beloved gone, O thou fairest among women? whither is thy beloved turned aside? that we may seek him with thee.
² My beloved is gone down into his garden, to the beds of spices, to feed in the gardens, and to gather lilies.
³ I am my beloved's, and my beloved is mine: he feedeth among the lilies.
⁴ Thou art beautiful, O my love, as Tirzah, comely as Jerusalem, terrible as an army with banners.
⁵ Turn away thine eyes from me, for they have overcome me: thy hair is as a flock of goats that appear from Gilead.
⁶ Thy teeth are as a flock of sheep which go up from the washing, whereof every one beareth twins, and there is not one barren among them.
⁷ As a piece of a pomegranate are thy temples within thy locks.
⁸ There are threescore queens, and fourscore concubines, and virgins without number.
⁹ My dove, my undefiled is but one; she is the only one of her mother, she is the choice one of her that bare her. The daughters saw her, and blessed her; yea, the queens and the concubines, and they praised her.
¹⁰ Who is she that looketh forth as the morning, fair as the moon, clear as the sun, and terrible as an army with banners?
¹¹ I went down into the garden of nuts to see the fruits of the valley, and to see whether the vine flourished and the pomegranates budded.
¹² Or ever I was aware, my soul made me like the chariots of Amminadib.
¹³ Return, return, O Shulamite; return, return, that we may look upon thee. What will ye see in the Shulamite? As it were the company of two armies.
Passage: Song of Solomon 7
¹ How beautiful are thy feet with shoes, O prince's daughter! the joints of thy thighs are like jewels, the work of the hands of a cunning workman.
² Thy navel is like a round goblet, which wanteth not liquor: thy belly is like an heap of wheat set about with lilies.
³ Thy two breasts are like two young roes that are twins.
⁴ Thy neck is as a tower of ivory; thine eyes like the fishpools in Heshbon, by the gate of Bathrabbim: thy nose is as the tower of Lebanon which looketh toward Damascus.
⁵ Thine head upon thee is like Carmel, and the hair of thine head like purple; the king is held in the galleries.
⁶ How fair and how pleasant art thou, O love, for delights!
⁷ This thy stature is like to a palm tree, and thy breasts to clusters of grapes.
⁸ I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of the boughs thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples;
⁹ And the roof of thy mouth like the best wine for my beloved, that goeth down sweetly, causing the lips of those that are asleep to speak.
¹⁰ I am my beloved's, and his desire is toward me.
¹¹ Come, my beloved, let us go forth into the field; let us lodge in the villages.
¹² Let us get up early to the vineyards; let us see if the vine flourish, whether the tender grape appear, and the pomegranates bud forth: there will I give thee my loves.
¹³ The mandrakes give a smell, and at our gates are all manner of pleasant fruits, new and old, which I have laid up for thee, O my beloved.
Passage: Song of Solomon 8
¹ O that thou wert as my brother, that sucked the breasts of my mother! when I should find thee without, I would kiss thee; yea, I should not be despised.
² I would lead thee, and bring thee into my mother's house, who would instruct me: I would cause thee to drink of spiced wine of the juice of my pomegranate.
³ His left hand should be under my head, and his right hand should embrace me.
⁴ I charge you, O daughters of Jerusalem, that ye stir not up, nor awake my love, until he please.
⁵ Who is this that cometh up from the wilderness, leaning upon her beloved? I raised thee up under the apple tree: there thy mother brought thee forth: there she brought thee forth that bare thee.
⁶ Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; jealousy is cruel as the grave: the coals thereof are coals of fire, which hath a most vehement flame.
⁷ Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it: if a man would give all the substance of his house for love, it would utterly be contemned.
⁸ We have a little sister, and she hath no breasts: what shall we do for our sister in the day when she shall be spoken for?
⁹ If she be a wall, we will build upon her a palace of silver: and if she be a door, we will inclose her with boards of cedar.
¹⁰ I am a wall, and my breasts like towers: then was I in his eyes as one that found favour.
¹¹ Solomon had a vineyard at Baalhamon; he let out the vineyard unto keepers; every one for the fruit thereof was to bring a thousand pieces of silver.
¹² My vineyard, which is mine, is before me: thou, O Solomon, must have a thousand, and those that keep the fruit thereof two hundred.
¹³ Thou that dwellest in the gardens, the companions hearken to thy voice: cause me to hear it.
¹⁴ Make haste, my beloved, and be thou like to a roe or to a young hart upon the mountains of spices.
DEVOTIONAL:
Song of Solomon is Scripture’s surprise: a book of love poetry placed in the middle of Israel’s wisdom writings. It does not blush at delight, longing, beauty, and the goodness of embodied life. In a world where desire is often treated as either dirty or divine, the Song treats it as something that must be ordered and protected. Love is celebrated, but it is also guarded, spoken of with reverence rather than with carelessness.
The Song’s voices remind us that covenant love is not one-dimensional. We hear mutual affection, playful praise, aching absence, and fierce commitment. There is a repeated warning not to stir up love before its time, which is not a denial of desire but a boundary placed around it. In Israel’s covenant story, love is never meant to be detached from faithfulness. The LORD’s own steadfast love toward His people is a love that keeps promises, not a love that evaporates when feelings cool.
Jewish readers have long treasured this book in the context of the covenant, hearing in its poetry echoes of God’s faithful bond with Israel. Christians have also seen a fitting reflection of the New Testament’s language about Messiah and His bride. We should be careful here: the Song is plainly about marital love, and it deserves to be heard as such. Yet Scripture itself teaches that marriage can function as a signpost, pointing beyond itself to covenant realities that are ultimately fulfilled in Christ.
Jesus does not save us by romance; He saves us by blood. Still, the love He gives is not cold or mechanical. He seeks, He calls, He cleanses, and He keeps. The Song’s joy and jealousy, its longing and satisfaction, can train our hearts to value faithful love over cheap thrills. In a culture that treats vows as disposable, the gospel restores honor to covenant commitments by grounding them in God’s own character.
The end of the Song speaks of a love that cannot be quenched by many waters. That kind of steadfastness does not come from mere personality. It grows where God is feared, where repentance is practiced, where forgiveness is real, and where promises are kept in the strength God supplies. The Song therefore invites us to receive love as a gift and to resist every counterfeit that asks us to trade holiness for heat.
In daily life, let this book teach you to honor God with your affections. If you are married, pursue tenderness and faithfulness with intentionality, speaking life rather than contempt and guarding your home from small betrayals. If you are single, do not treat purity as a punishment; treat it as wisdom that preserves your heart for God’s timing. In the church, practice the kind of love that is truthful, protective, and patient, because our discipleship is meant to reshape what we desire.
In U.S. civic life, the virtue of fidelity is a public good: communities fracture when vows and responsibilities are mocked. Pray for marriages, for children who need stable homes, and for those trapped in exploitation to be rescued and restored. Christians should show up as people who keep their word, protect the vulnerable, and treat covenant promises as precious rather than optional.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
What does Song of Solomon teach you about the difference between desire that is ordered and desire that is reckless?
How does covenant faithfulness in marriage reflect God’s steadfast love without turning marriage into an idol?
Where have you seen culture pressure you to treat vows lightly, and how does Scripture call you to a different posture?
How can the gospel reshape both your boundaries and your tenderness in relationships?
PRAYER:
ADORATION:
Lord, You are faithful love in perfect purity. Your covenant kindness is strong, steady, and beautiful, and You never abandon what You have promised.
CONFESSION:
I confess that my heart is easily drawn toward counterfeit comforts and that I sometimes treat people as means instead of neighbors to be loved. Cleanse my desires and forgive my selfishness.
THANKSGIVING:
Thank You for the good gift of marriage, for the dignity of the body, and for the way Your Word speaks honestly about love. Thank You for Jesus, who loved us and gave Himself for us.
SUPPLICATION – GENERAL:
Shape my affections by Your holiness. Grant grace for faithfulness, courage for purity, and gentleness in speech. Heal wounded relationships and teach me to love with truth and patience.
SUPPLICATION – U.S. / CIVIC:
Strengthen families in our communities, protect children, and expose every form of exploitation. Give our leaders wisdom to uphold what is good, and make Your church a refuge where repentance and restoration are real.

SCRIPTURE READING:
2 Chronicles 1; Psalm 72
SCRIPTURE:
Passage: 2 Chronicles 1
¹ And Solomon the son of David was strengthened in his kingdom, and the LORD his God was with him, and magnified him exceedingly.
² Then Solomon spake unto all Israel, to the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and to the judges, and to every governor in all Israel, the chief of the fathers.
³ So Solomon, and all the congregation with him, went to the high place that was at Gibeon; for there was the tabernacle of the congregation of God, which Moses the servant of the LORD had made in the wilderness.
⁴ But the ark of God had David brought up from Kirjathjearim to the place which David had prepared for it: for he had pitched a tent for it at Jerusalem.
⁵ Moreover the brasen altar, that Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, had made, he put before the tabernacle of the LORD: and Solomon and the congregation sought unto it.
⁶ And Solomon went up thither to the brasen altar before the LORD, which was at the tabernacle of the congregation, and offered a thousand burnt offerings upon it.
⁷ In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee.
⁸ And Solomon said unto God, Thou hast shewed great mercy unto David my father, and hast made me to reign in his stead.
⁹ Now, O LORD God, let thy promise unto David my father be established: for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude.
¹⁰ Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?
¹¹ And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king:
¹² Wisdom and knowledge is granted unto thee; and I will give thee riches, and wealth, and honour, such as none of the kings have had that have been before thee, neither shall there any after thee have the like.
¹³ Then Solomon came from his journey to the high place that was at Gibeon to Jerusalem, from before the tabernacle of the congregation, and reigned over Israel.
¹⁴ And Solomon gathered chariots and horsemen: and he had a thousand and four hundred chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen, which he placed in the chariot cities, and with the king at Jerusalem.
¹⁵ And the king made silver and gold at Jerusalem as plenteous as stones, and cedar trees made he as the sycomore trees that are in the vale for abundance.
¹⁶ And Solomon had horses brought out of Egypt, and linen yarn: the king's merchants received the linen yarn at a price.
¹⁷ And they fetched up, and brought forth out of Egypt a chariot for six hundred shekels of silver, and an horse for an hundred and fifty: and so brought they out horses for all the kings of the Hittites, and for the kings of Syria, by their means.
Passage: Psalm 72
A Psalm for Solomon.
¹ Give the king thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king's son.
² He shall judge thy people with righteousness, and thy poor with judgment.
³ The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills, by righteousness.
⁴ He shall judge the poor of the people, he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor.
⁵ They shall fear thee as long as the sun and moon endure, throughout all generations.
⁶ He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth.
⁷ In his days shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace so long as the moon endureth.
⁸ He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth.
⁹ They that dwell in the wilderness shall bow before him; and his enemies shall lick the dust.
¹⁰ The kings of Tarshish and of the isles shall bring presents: the kings of Sheba and Seba shall offer gifts.
¹¹ Yea, all kings shall fall down before him: all nations shall serve him.
¹² For he shall deliver the needy when he crieth; the poor also, and him that hath no helper.
¹³ He shall spare the poor and needy, and shall save the souls of the needy.
¹⁴ He shall redeem their soul from deceit and violence: and precious shall their blood be in his sight.
¹⁵ And he shall live, and to him shall be given of the gold of Sheba: prayer also shall be made for him continually; and daily shall he be praised.
¹⁶ There shall be an handful of corn in the earth upon the top of the mountains; the fruit thereof shall shake like Lebanon: and they of the city shall flourish like grass of the earth.
¹⁷ His name shall endure for ever: his name shall be continued as long as the sun: and men shall be blessed in him: all nations shall call him blessed.
¹⁸ Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.
¹⁹ And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen.
²⁰ The prayers of David the son of Jesse are ended.
DEVOTIONAL:
Solomon’s first public steps as king are strangely quiet: he goes to Gibeon to worship. In 2 Chronicles 1 the ark is in Jerusalem, yet the tabernacle Moses made and the bronze altar are at Gibeon, so Israel is living in a holy “in between” moment. The kingdom is established, but the worship life of the nation is still being gathered into one place. Solomon does not treat that tension like a shortcut problem. He meets God where God has appointed, and he offers costly sacrifices before he asks for anything at all.
When the LORD invites Solomon, “Ask what I shall give thee,” Solomon answers by remembering covenant mercy. He speaks of what God has already done for David, and he feels the weight of governing a people “like the dust of the earth.” His request is not for a private advantage, but for wisdom and knowledge to go out and come in before the congregation. In the Old Testament, wisdom is not a clever trick; it is skill for faithful living under God’s rule. That fits the Torah’s picture of a king who must learn God’s law and lead with justice rather than appetite.
God’s response is both gift and warning. The LORD delights to grant wisdom, and He adds riches and honour besides, showing that He is no stingy God. Yet the story of Solomon as a whole will later reveal how blessings can become weighty tests. The same hands that receive gold can start to cling to it. The same mind that sees clearly can begin to rationalize sin. Scripture is honest: God’s generosity is real, and so is the danger of drifting once we have what we prayed for.
Psalm 72 reads like a prayer that stretches beyond any merely human reign. It asks for judgments, righteousness, peace, and rescue for the poor. It pictures a king whose dominion reaches “from sea to sea,” and whose name becomes a blessing to all nations. Solomon may have tasted moments of such wisdom, but no son of David finally carried this Psalm to its full height. The Psalm sets our hopes on the promised King who will rule with righteousness without ever bending toward vanity or idolatry.
Jesus the Messiah is the greater Solomon and the truer fulfillment of Psalm 72. He does not begin His kingdom by grasping power; He begins by obeying the Father, loving the lowly, and giving Himself as a sacrifice. In Him, wisdom is not a trophy for the strong but bread for the needy. When we ask for wisdom, we come through the One who is “made unto us wisdom” and who teaches His disciples to seek first the kingdom of God.
In daily life, Solomon’s night at Gibeon teaches us to move the altar before the agenda. Bring decisions to God before you bring them to your friends, your feed, or your fears. Ask for wisdom that serves your spouse, your children, your co-workers, and your church, not wisdom that merely makes you look impressive. Let Scripture shape what you want, and let prayer humble what you think you deserve.
In U.S. civic life, the virtue of prudence joined to justice fits this reading: leaders need wisdom that protects the poor and judges honestly. Pray for presidents, governors, mayors, judges, and all who carry authority to fear the LORD more than polls or pressure. Christians should show up as steady, thoughtful neighbors who speak truth without swagger and who keep interceding even when the public square feels noisy.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
What does Solomon’s choice to worship before he asks reveal about what he believes God deserves?
Where do you most feel the weight of responsibility right now, and how could godly wisdom reshape the way you carry it?
How does Psalm 72 expand your expectations for what righteous leadership should look like?
What would it mean for you to seek wisdom through Jesus rather than seeking control through your own strength?
PRAYER:
ADORATION:
Holy LORD, You are the Giver of wisdom, the Judge of all the earth, and the Shepherd who defends the needy. Your righteousness is not borrowed, and Your mercy is not fragile.
CONFESSION:
Father, I confess how quickly I ask for results instead of asking for wisdom, and how often I want blessings that would make my name larger rather than Your name honored. Forgive my pride and my impatience.
THANKSGIVING:
Thank You for Your covenant faithfulness to David and for the way You keep Your promises through generations. Thank You most of all for Jesus the Messiah, the King who is righteous and gentle.
SUPPLICATION – GENERAL:
Give me wisdom and knowledge for the duties You have placed in my hands. Teach me to lead with humility in my home, to listen well, to speak carefully, and to love the people You call me to serve.
SUPPLICATION – U.S. / CIVIC:
Grant prudence and justice to those who govern in our land, especially those who make laws and render judgments. Turn our leaders from vanity, protect the vulnerable, and make Your people a praying people who pursue the common good with integrity.

¹ And Solomon made affinity with Pharaoh king of Egypt, and took Pharaoh’s daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had made an end of building his own house, and the house of the LORD, and the wall of Jerusalem round about.
² Only the people sacrificed in high places, because there was no house built unto the name of the LORD, until those days.
³ And Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in high places.
⁴ And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there; for that [was] the great high place: a thousand burnt offerings did Solomon offer upon that altar.
⁵ In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee.
⁶ And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as [it is] this day.
⁷ And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I [am but] a little child: I know not [how] to go out or come in.
⁸ And thy servant [is] in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude.
⁹ Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
¹⁰ And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing.
¹¹ And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment;
¹² Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
¹³ And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days.
¹⁴ And if thou wilt walk in my ways, to keep my statutes and my commandments, as thy father David did walk, then I will lengthen thy days.
¹⁵ And Solomon awoke; and, behold, [it was] a dream. And he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and offered up burnt offerings, and offered peace offerings, and made a feast to all his servants.
¹⁶ Then came there two women, [that were] harlots, unto the king, and stood before him.
¹⁷ And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was delivered of a child with her in the house.
¹⁸ And it came to pass the third day after that I was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we [were] together; [there was] no stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house.
¹⁹ And this woman’s child died in the night; because she overlaid it.
²⁰ And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while thine handmaid slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead child in my bosom.
²¹ And when I rose in the morning to give my child suck, behold, it was dead: but when I had considered it in the morning, behold, it was not my son, which I did bear.
²² And the other woman said, Nay; but the living [is] my son, and the dead [is] thy son. And this said, No; but the dead [is] thy son, and the living [is] my son. Thus they spake before the king.
²³ Then said the king, The one saith, This [is] my son that liveth, and thy son [is] the dead: and the other saith, Nay; but thy son [is] the dead, and my son [is] the living.
²⁴ And the king said, Bring me a sword. And they brought a sword before the king.
²⁵ And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other.
²⁶ Then spake the woman whose the living child [was] unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, [but] divide [it].
²⁷ Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she [is] the mother thereof.
²⁸ And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had judged; and they feared the king: for they saw that the wisdom of God [was] in him, to do judgment.
First Kings 4
¹ So king Solomon was king over all Israel.
² And these [were] the princes which he had; Azariah the son of Zadok the priest,
³ Elihoreph and Ahiah, the sons of Shisha, scribes; Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud, the recorder.
⁴ And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada [was] over the host: and Zadok and Abiathar [were] the priests:
⁵ And Azariah the son of Nathan [was] over the officers: and Zabud the son of Nathan [was] principal officer, [and] the king’s friend:
⁶ And Ahishar [was] over the household: and Adoniram the son of Abda [was] over the tribute.
⁷ And Solomon had twelve officers over all Israel, which provided victuals for the king and his household: each man his month in a year made provision.
⁸ And these [are] their names: The son of Hur, in mount Ephraim:
⁹ The son of Dekar, in Makaz, and in Shaalbim, and Bethshemesh, and Elonbethhanan:
¹⁰ The son of Hesed, in Aruboth; to him [pertained] Sochoh, and all the land of Hepher:
¹¹ The son of Abinadab, in all the region of Dor; which had Taphath the daughter of Solomon to wife:
¹² Baana the son of Ahilud; [to him pertained] Taanach and Megiddo, and all Bethshean, which [is] by Zartanah beneath Jezreel, from Bethshean to Abelmeholah, [even] unto [the place that is] beyond Jokneam:
¹³ The son of Geber, in Ramothgilead; to him [pertained] the towns of Jair the son of Manasseh, which [are] in Gilead; to him [also pertained] the region of Argob, which [is] in Bashan, threescore great cities with walls and brasen bars:
¹⁴ Ahinadab the son of Iddo [had] Mahanaim:
¹⁵ Ahimaaz [was] in Naphtali; he also took Basmath the daughter of Solomon to wife:
¹⁶ Baanah the son of Hushai [was] in Asher and in Aloth:
¹⁷ Jehoshaphat the son of Paruah, in Issachar:
¹⁸ Shimei the son of Elah, in Benjamin:
¹⁹ Geber the son of Uri [was] in the country of Gilead, [in] the country of Sihon king of the Amorites, and of Og king of Bashan; and [he was] the only officer which [was] in the land.
²⁰ Judah and Israel [were] many, as the sand which [is] by the sea in multitude, eating and drinking, and making merry.
²¹ And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the river unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt: they brought presents, and served Solomon all the days of his life.
²² And Solomon’s provision for one day was thirty measures of fine flour, and threescore measures of meal,
²³ Ten fat oxen, and twenty oxen out of the pastures, and an hundred sheep, beside harts, and roebucks, and fallowdeer, and fatted fowl.
²⁴ For he had dominion over all [the region] on this side the river, from Tiphsah even to Azzah, over all the kings on this side the river: and he had peace on all sides round about him.
²⁵ And Judah and Israel dwelt safely, every man under his vine and under his fig tree, from Dan even to Beersheba, all the days of Solomon.
²⁶ And Solomon had forty thousand stalls of horses for his chariots, and twelve thousand horsemen.
²⁷ And those officers provided victual for king Solomon, and for all that came unto king Solomon’s table, every man in his month: they lacked nothing.
²⁸ Barley also and straw for the horses and dromedaries brought they unto the place where [the officers] were, every man according to his charge.
²⁹ And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that [is] on the sea shore.
³⁰ And Solomon’s wisdom excelled the wisdom of all the children of the east country, and all the wisdom of Egypt.
³¹ For he was wiser than all men; than Ethan the Ezrahite, and Heman, and Chalcol, and Darda, the sons of Mahol: and his fame was in all nations round about.
³² And he spake three thousand proverbs: and his songs were a thousand and five.
³³ And he spake of trees, from the cedar tree that [is] in Lebanon even unto the hyssop that springeth out of the wall: he spake also of beasts, and of fowl, and of creeping things, and of fishes.
³⁴ And there came of all people to hear the wisdom of Solomon, from all kings of the earth, which had heard of his wisdom.
DEVOTIONAL:
Solomon's request for an understanding heart is one of the most important moments in the early kingdom. He stands at Gibeon as a young king conscious of his inadequacy, responsible for a great people he cannot govern by natural ability alone. The LORD invites him to ask, and Solomon asks for wisdom to judge rightly. His request pleases God because it is shaped by service rather than self-exaltation.
In covenant perspective, the king needed more than authority, wealth, or public honor. He needed discernment under the LORD's rule. The famous judgment between the two women shows wisdom serving justice, especially for people whose names and status are not celebrated. Solomon's wisdom is not mere cleverness. It is the capacity to hear, distinguish, and act for righteousness among God's people.
The peace and order of 1 Kings 4 give a glimpse of kingdom blessing: provision, administration, safety, and breadth of understanding. Yet the larger biblical story will also teach that Solomon's wisdom, though extraordinary, is not the final hope. A peaceful kingdom still requires covenant faithfulness. Wisdom must remain submitted to the LORD, or blessing can become a stage for later compromise.
Jesus is greater than Solomon. He possesses perfect wisdom, judges with righteousness, and brings peace deeper than prosperity. His kingdom is not merely well administered; it renews hearts, defeats sin, and gathers people into true rest. In Him are hidden the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, and those who lack wisdom are invited to ask the Father in faith.
In daily life, this passage calls believers to obey God by asking for wisdom before making decisions. Character grows through humility that listens, discernment that seeks justice, and patience that refuses impulsive judgment. Families can practice wise listening in conflict, workers can weigh choices with fairness and prayer, and churches can seek the mind of Christ rather than confusing cleverness, popularity, or status with true wisdom.
In U.S. civic life, this reading commends the virtue of wise discernment. It turns prayer toward judges, teachers, parents, public officials, pastors, and citizens who must make decisions affecting others. Christians should show up by asking God for wisdom and practicing justice with humility, patience, and care for the vulnerable.

DEVOTIONAL:
Psalm 119 is a vast prayer of love for the word of the LORD. It speaks of delight, affliction, meditation, obedience, longing, correction, hope, and perseverance. The psalmist does not treat Scripture as a religious accessory. God's testimonies, statutes, judgments, precepts, and commandments are life, treasure, counsel, comfort, and light. The word shapes the path when the world is confusing and the heart is weak.
For Israel, Torah was covenant instruction, the gracious revelation of how to live with the LORD. The psalmist's love is therefore relational, not merely intellectual. He treasures the commandments because they reveal God's character and train the heart in faithfulness. Affliction does not make the word less necessary; it makes the word more precious. The suffering believer learns to cling, meditate, and ask for understanding.
The psalm also shows that obedience and dependence belong together. The psalmist resolves to keep God's way, yet constantly asks the LORD to teach, quicken, strengthen, and incline his heart. This is not self-salvation through rule keeping. It is covenant devotion that knows the human heart needs grace in order to walk rightly. The word exposes sin, but it also revives the weary and gives hope.
Jesus is the Word made flesh and the perfectly obedient Son. He fulfills the law, embodies God's wisdom, and opens the Scriptures to His people. Through Him, the instruction of the LORD is not discarded but written on hearts by the Spirit. The believer's love for Scripture becomes love for the God who speaks and for the Messiah to whom the Scriptures bear witness.
In daily life, this reading calls believers to obey God by receiving His word as light rather than using it only for occasional comfort. Character is formed through meditation, correction, memorized truth, and persevering obedience. Families can hide Scripture in the heart together, workers can make decisions by the lamp of God's truth, and churches can become communities shaped by the whole counsel of God rather than by impulse, trend, or fear.
In U.S. civic life, this reading teaches Scripture-shaped wisdom as a public good. It calls for prayer over children, students, teachers, churches, and public voices needing truth, discernment, and moral clarity. Christians should show up by living under God's word with humility and showing that truth is a lamp, not a weapon for pride.

³ So they sought for a fair damsel throughout all the coasts of Israel, and found Abishag a Shunammite, and brought her to the king.
⁴ And the damsel [was] very fair, and cherished the king, and ministered to him: but the king knew her not.
⁵ Then Adonijah the son of Haggith exalted himself, saying, I will be king: and he prepared him chariots and horsemen, and fifty men to run before him.
⁶ And his father had not displeased him at any time in saying, Why hast thou done so? and he also [was a] very goodly [man]; and [his mother] bare him after Absalom.
⁷ And he conferred with Joab the son of Zeruiah, and with Abiathar the priest: and they following Adonijah helped [him].
⁸ But Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and Nathan the prophet, and Shimei, and Rei, and the mighty men which [belonged] to David, were not with Adonijah.
⁹ And Adonijah slew sheep and oxen and fat cattle by the stone of Zoheleth, which [is] by Enrogel, and called all his brethren the king’s sons, and all the men of Judah the king’s servants:
¹⁰ But Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah, and the mighty men, and Solomon his brother, he called not.
¹¹ Wherefore Nathan spake unto Bathsheba the mother of Solomon, saying, Hast thou not heard that Adonijah the son of Haggith doth reign, and David our lord knoweth [it] not?
¹² Now therefore come, let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel, that thou mayest save thine own life, and the life of thy son Solomon.
¹³ Go and get thee in unto king David, and say unto him, Didst not thou, my lord, O king, swear unto thine handmaid, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne? why then doth Adonijah reign?
¹⁴ Behold, while thou yet talkest there with the king, I also will come in after thee, and confirm thy words.
¹⁵ And Bathsheba went in unto the king into the chamber: and the king was very old; and Abishag the Shunammite ministered unto the king.
¹⁶ And Bathsheba bowed, and did obeisance unto the king. And the king said, What wouldest thou?
¹⁷ And she said unto him, My lord, thou swarest by the LORD thy God unto thine handmaid, [saying], Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne.
¹⁸ And now, behold, Adonijah reigneth; and now, my lord the king, thou knowest [it] not:
¹⁹ And he hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the sons of the king, and Abiathar the priest, and Joab the captain of the host: but Solomon thy servant hath he not called.
²⁰ And thou, my lord, O king, the eyes of all Israel [are] upon thee, that thou shouldest tell them who shall sit on the throne of my lord the king after him.
²¹ Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord the king shall sleep with his fathers, that I and my son Solomon shall be counted offenders.
²² And, lo, while she yet talked with the king, Nathan the prophet also came in.
²³ And they told the king, saying, Behold Nathan the prophet. And when he was come in before the king, he bowed himself before the king with his face to the ground.
²⁴ And Nathan said, My lord, O king, hast thou said, Adonijah shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne?
²⁵ For he is gone down this day, and hath slain oxen and fat cattle and sheep in abundance, and hath called all the king’s sons, and the captains of the host, and Abiathar the priest; and, behold, they eat and drink before him, and say, God save king Adonijah.
²⁶ But me, [even] me thy servant, and Zadok the priest, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and thy servant Solomon, hath he not called.
²⁷ Is this thing done by my lord the king, and thou hast not shewed [it] unto thy servant, who should sit on the throne of my lord the king after him?
²⁸ Then king David answered and said, Call me Bathsheba. And she came into the king’s presence, and stood before the king.
²⁹ And the king sware, and said, [As] the LORD liveth, that hath redeemed my soul out of all distress,
³⁰ Even as I sware unto thee by the LORD God of Israel, saying, Assuredly Solomon thy son shall reign after me, and he shall sit upon my throne in my stead; even so will I certainly do this day.
³¹ Then Bathsheba bowed with [her] face to the earth, and did reverence to the king, and said, Let my lord king David live for ever.
³² And king David said, Call me Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada. And they came before the king.
³³ The king also said unto them, Take with you the servants of your lord, and cause Solomon my son to ride upon mine own mule, and bring him down to Gihon:
³⁴ And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon.
³⁵ Then ye shall come up after him, that he may come and sit upon my throne; for he shall be king in my stead: and I have appointed him to be ruler over Israel and over Judah.
³⁶ And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada answered the king, and said, Amen: the LORD God of my lord the king say so [too].
³⁷ As the LORD hath been with my lord the king, even so be he with Solomon, and make his throne greater than the throne of my lord king David.
³⁸ So Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, went down, and caused Solomon to ride upon king David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon.
³⁹ And Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon. And they blew the trumpet; and all the people said, God save king Solomon.
⁴⁰ And all the people came up after him, and the people piped with pipes, and rejoiced with great joy, so that the earth rent with the sound of them.
⁴¹ And Adonijah and all the guests that [were] with him heard [it] as they had made an end of eating. And when Joab heard the sound of the trumpet, he said, Wherefore [is this] noise of the city being in an uproar?
⁴² And while he yet spake, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came: and Adonijah said unto him, Come in; for thou [art] a valiant man, and bringest good tidings.
⁴³ And Jonathan answered and said to Adonijah, Verily our lord king David hath made Solomon king.
⁴⁴ And the king hath sent with him Zadok the priest, and Nathan the prophet, and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and they have caused him to ride upon the king’s mule:
⁴⁵ And Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet have anointed him king in Gihon: and they are come up from thence rejoicing, so that the city rang again. This [is] the noise that ye have heard.
⁴⁶ And also Solomon sitteth on the throne of the kingdom.
⁴⁷ And moreover the king’s servants came to bless our lord king David, saying, God make the name of Solomon better than thy name, and make his throne greater than thy throne. And the king bowed himself upon the bed.
⁴⁸ And also thus said the king, Blessed [be] the LORD God of Israel, which hath given [one] to sit on my throne this day, mine eyes even seeing [it].
⁴⁹ And all the guests that [were] with Adonijah were afraid, and rose up, and went every man his way.
⁵⁰ And Adonijah feared because of Solomon, and arose, and went, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
⁵¹ And it was told Solomon, saying, Behold, Adonijah feareth king Solomon: for, lo, he hath caught hold on the horns of the altar, saying, Let king Solomon swear unto me to day that he will not slay his servant with the sword.
⁵² And Solomon said, If he will shew himself a worthy man, there shall not an hair of him fall to the earth: but if wickedness shall be found in him, he shall die.
⁵³ So king Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and bowed himself to king Solomon: and Solomon said unto him, Go to thine house.
First Kings 2
¹ Now the days of David drew nigh that he should die; and he charged Solomon his son, saying,
² I go the way of all the earth: be thou strong therefore, and shew thyself a man;
³ And keep the charge of the LORD thy God, to walk in his ways, to keep his statutes, and his commandments, and his judgments, and his testimonies, as it is written in the law of Moses, that thou mayest prosper in all that thou doest, and whithersoever thou turnest thyself:
⁴ That the LORD may continue his word which he spake concerning me, saying, If thy children take heed to their way, to walk before me in truth with all their heart and with all their soul, there shall not fail thee (said he) a man on the throne of Israel.
⁵ Moreover thou knowest also what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, [and] what he did to the two captains of the hosts of Israel, unto Abner the son of Ner, and unto Amasa the son of Jether, whom he slew, and shed the blood of war in peace, and put the blood of war upon his girdle that [was] about his loins, and in his shoes that [were] on his feet.
⁶ Do therefore according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoar head go down to the grave in peace.
⁷ But shew kindness unto the sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be of those that eat at thy table: for so they came to me when I fled because of Absalom thy brother.
⁸ And, behold, [thou hast] with thee Shimei the son of Gera, a Benjamite of Bahurim, which cursed me with a grievous curse in the day when I went to Mahanaim: but he came down to meet me at Jordan, and I sware to him by the LORD, saying, I will not put thee to death with the sword.
⁹ Now therefore hold him not guiltless: for thou [art] a wise man, and knowest what thou oughtest to do unto him; but his hoar head bring thou down to the grave with blood.
¹⁰ So David slept with his fathers, and was buried in the city of David.
¹¹ And the days that David reigned over Israel [were] forty years: seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three years reigned he in Jerusalem.
¹² Then sat Solomon upon the throne of David his father; and his kingdom was established greatly.
¹³ And Adonijah the son of Haggith came to Bathsheba the mother of Solomon. And she said, Comest thou peaceably? And he said, Peaceably.
¹⁴ He said moreover, I have somewhat to say unto thee. And she said, Say on.
¹⁵ And he said, Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and [that] all Israel set their faces on me, that I should reign: howbeit the kingdom is turned about, and is become my brother’s: for it was his from the LORD.
¹⁶ And now I ask one petition of thee, deny me not. And she said unto him, Say on.
¹⁷ And he said, Speak, I pray thee, unto Solomon the king, (for he will not say thee nay,) that he give me Abishag the Shunammite to wife.
¹⁸ And Bathsheba said, Well; I will speak for thee unto the king.
¹⁹ Bathsheba therefore went unto king Solomon, to speak unto him for Adonijah. And the king rose up to meet her, and bowed himself unto her, and sat down on his throne, and caused a seat to be set for the king’s mother; and she sat on his right hand.
²⁰ Then she said, I desire one small petition of thee; [I pray thee], say me not nay. And the king said unto her, Ask on, my mother: for I will not say thee nay.
²¹ And she said, Let Abishag the Shunammite be given to Adonijah thy brother to wife.
²² And king Solomon answered and said unto his mother, And why dost thou ask Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? ask for him the kingdom also; for he [is] mine elder brother; even for him, and for Abiathar the priest, and for Joab the son of Zeruiah.
²³ Then king Solomon sware by the LORD, saying, God do so to me, and more also, if Adonijah have not spoken this word against his own life.
²⁴ Now therefore, [as] the LORD liveth, which hath established me, and set me on the throne of David my father, and who hath made me an house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death this day.
²⁵ And king Solomon sent by the hand of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; and he fell upon him that he died.
²⁶ And unto Abiathar the priest said the king, Get thee to Anathoth, unto thine own fields; for thou [art] worthy of death: but I will not at this time put thee to death, because thou barest the ark of the Lord GOD before David my father, and because thou hast been afflicted in all wherein my father was afflicted.
²⁷ So Solomon thrust out Abiathar from being priest unto the LORD; that he might fulfil the word of the LORD, which he spake concerning the house of Eli in Shiloh.
²⁸ Then tidings came to Joab: for Joab had turned after Adonijah, though he turned not after Absalom. And Joab fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD, and caught hold on the horns of the altar.
²⁹ And it was told king Solomon that Joab was fled unto the tabernacle of the LORD; and, behold, [he is] by the altar. Then Solomon sent Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, saying, Go, fall upon him.
³⁰ And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the LORD, and said unto him, Thus saith the king, Come forth. And he said, Nay; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me.
³¹ And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said, and fall upon him, and bury him; that thou mayest take away the innocent blood, which Joab shed, from me, and from the house of my father.
³² And the LORD shall return his blood upon his own head, who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing [thereof, to wit], Abner the son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah.
³³ Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and upon his throne, shall there be peace for ever from the LORD.
³⁴ So Benaiah the son of Jehoiada went up, and fell upon him, and slew him: and he was buried in his own house in the wilderness.
³⁵ And the king put Benaiah the son of Jehoiada in his room over the host: and Zadok the priest did the king put in the room of Abiathar.
³⁶ And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Build thee an house in Jerusalem, and dwell there, and go not forth thence any whither.
³⁷ For it shall be, [that] on the day thou goest out, and passest over the brook Kidron, thou shalt know for certain that thou shalt surely die: thy blood shall be upon thine own head.
³⁸ And Shimei said unto the king, The saying [is] good: as my lord the king hath said, so will thy servant do. And Shimei dwelt in Jerusalem many days.
³⁹ And it came to pass at the end of three years, that two of the servants of Shimei ran away unto Achish son of Maachah king of Gath. And they told Shimei, saying, Behold, thy servants [be] in Gath.
⁴⁰ And Shimei arose, and saddled his ass, and went to Gath to Achish to seek his servants: and Shimei went, and brought his servants from Gath.
⁴¹ And it was told Solomon that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath, and was come again.
⁴² And the king sent and called for Shimei, and said unto him, Did I not make thee to swear by the LORD, and protested unto thee, saying, Know for a certain, on the day thou goest out, and walkest abroad any whither, that thou shalt surely die? and thou saidst unto me, The word [that] I have heard [is] good.
⁴³ Why then hast thou not kept the oath of the LORD, and the commandment that I have charged thee with?
⁴⁴ The king said moreover to Shimei, Thou knowest all the wickedness which thine heart is privy to, that thou didst to David my father: therefore the LORD shall return thy wickedness upon thine own head;
⁴⁵ And king Solomon [shall be] blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the LORD for ever.
⁴⁶ So the king commanded Benaiah the son of Jehoiada; which went out, and fell upon him, that he died. And the kingdom was established in the hand of Solomon.
Psalm 37
¹ [A Psalm] of David. Fret not thyself because of evildoers, neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity.
² For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb. ב
³ Trust in the LORD, and do good; [so] shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.
⁴ Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. ג
⁵ Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring [it] to pass.
⁶ And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light, and thy judgment as the noonday. ד
⁷ Rest in the LORD, and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. ה
⁸ Cease from anger, and forsake wrath: fret not thyself in any wise to do evil.
⁹ For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth. ו
¹⁰ For yet a little while, and the wicked [shall] not [be]: yea, thou shalt diligently consider his place, and it [shall] not [be].
¹¹ But the meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. ז
¹² The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth.
¹³ The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming. ח
¹⁴ The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, [and] to slay such as be of upright conversation.
¹⁵ Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken. ט
¹⁶ A little that a righteous man hath [is] better than the riches of many wicked.
¹⁷ For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the LORD upholdeth the righteous. י
¹⁸ The LORD knoweth the days of the upright: and their inheritance shall be for ever.
¹⁹ They shall not be ashamed in the evil time: and in the days of famine they shall be satisfied. כ
²⁰ But the wicked shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD [shall be] as the fat of lambs: they shall consume; into smoke shall they consume away. ל
²¹ The wicked borroweth, and payeth not again: but the righteous sheweth mercy, and giveth.
²² For [such as be] blessed of him shall inherit the earth; and [they that be] cursed of him shall be cut off. מ
²³ The steps of a [good] man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.
²⁴ Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth [him with] his hand. נ
²⁵ I have been young, and [now] am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.
²⁶ [He is] ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed [is] blessed. ס
²⁷ Depart from evil, and do good; and dwell for evermore.
²⁸ For the LORD loveth judgment, and forsaketh not his saints; they are preserved for ever: but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.
²⁹ The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever. פ
³⁰ The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment.
³¹ The law of his God [is] in his heart; none of his steps shall slide. צ
³² The wicked watcheth the righteous, and seeketh to slay him.
³³ The LORD will not leave him in his hand, nor condemn him when he is judged. ק
³⁴ Wait on the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall exalt thee to inherit the land: when the wicked are cut off, thou shalt see [it]. ר
³⁵ I have seen the wicked in great power, and spreading himself like a green bay tree.
³⁶ Yet he passed away, and, lo, he [was] not: yea, I sought him, but he could not be found. ש
³⁷ Mark the perfect [man], and behold the upright: for the end of [that] man [is] peace.
³⁸ But the transgressors shall be destroyed together: the end of the wicked shall be cut off. ת
³⁹ But the salvation of the righteous [is] of the LORD: [he is] their strength in the time of trouble.
⁴⁰ And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him.
Psalm 71
¹ In thee, O LORD, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion.
² Deliver me in thy righteousness, and cause me to escape: incline thine ear unto me, and save me.
³ Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou [art] my rock and my fortress.
⁴ Deliver me, O my God, out of the hand of the wicked, out of the hand of the unrighteous and cruel man.
⁵ For thou [art] my hope, O Lord GOD: [thou art] my trust from my youth.
⁶ By thee have I been holden up from the womb: thou art he that took me out of my mother’s bowels: my praise [shall be] continually of thee.
⁷ I am as a wonder unto many; but thou [art] my strong refuge.
⁸ Let my mouth be filled [with] thy praise [and with] thy honour all the day.
⁹ Cast me not off in the time of old age; forsake me not when my strength faileth.
¹⁰ For mine enemies speak against me; and they that lay wait for my soul take counsel together,
¹¹ Saying, God hath forsaken him: persecute and take him; for [there is] none to deliver [him].
¹² O God, be not far from me: O my God, make haste for my help.
¹³ Let them be confounded [and] consumed that are adversaries to my soul; let them be covered [with] reproach and dishonour that seek my hurt.
¹⁴ But I will hope continually, and will yet praise thee more and more.
¹⁵ My mouth shall shew forth thy righteousness [and] thy salvation all the day; for I know not the numbers [thereof].
¹⁶ I will go in the strength of the Lord GOD: I will make mention of thy righteousness, [even] of thine only.
¹⁷ O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared thy wondrous works.
¹⁸ Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed thy strength unto [this] generation, [and] thy power to every one [that] is to come.
¹⁹ Thy righteousness also, O God, [is] very high, who hast done great things: O God, who [is] like unto thee!
²⁰ [Thou], which hast shewed me great and sore troubles, shalt quicken me again, and shalt bring me up again from the depths of the earth.
²¹ Thou shalt increase my greatness, and comfort me on every side.
²² I will also praise thee with the psaltery, [even] thy truth, O my God: unto thee will I sing with the harp, O thou Holy One of Israel.
²³ My lips shall greatly rejoice when I sing unto thee; and my soul, which thou hast redeemed.
²⁴ My tongue also shall talk of thy righteousness all the day long: for they are confounded, for they are brought unto shame, that seek my hurt.
Psalm 94
¹ O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself.
² Lift up thyself, thou judge of the earth: render a reward to the proud.
³ LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked triumph?
⁴ [How long] shall they utter [and] speak hard things? [and] all the workers of iniquity boast themselves?
⁵ They break in pieces thy people, O LORD, and afflict thine heritage.
⁶ They slay the widow and the stranger, and murder the fatherless.
⁷ Yet they say, The LORD shall not see, neither shall the God of Jacob regard [it].
⁸ Understand, ye brutish among the people: and [ye] fools, when will ye be wise?
⁹ He that planted the ear, shall he not hear? he that formed the eye, shall he not see?
¹⁰ He that chastiseth the heathen, shall not he correct? he that teacheth man knowledge, [shall not he know]?
¹¹ The LORD knoweth the thoughts of man, that they [are] vanity.
¹² Blessed [is] the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law;
¹³ That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked.
¹⁴ For the LORD will not cast off his people, neither will he forsake his inheritance.
¹⁵ But judgment shall return unto righteousness: and all the upright in heart shall follow it.
¹⁶ Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? [or] who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?
¹⁷ Unless the LORD [had been] my help, my soul had almost dwelt in silence.
¹⁸ When I said, My foot slippeth; thy mercy, O LORD, held me up.
¹⁹ In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.
²⁰ Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law?
²¹ They gather themselves together against the soul of the righteous, and condemn the innocent blood.
²² But the LORD is my defence; and my God [is] the rock of my refuge.
²³ And he shall bring upon them their own iniquity, and shall cut them off in their own wickedness; [yea], the LORD our God shall cut them off.
DEVOTIONAL:
The transition from David to Solomon includes urgency, weakness, wisdom, and judgment. Adonijah seeks the throne, Nathan and Bathsheba act, Solomon is anointed, and David gives his final charge. The psalms assigned alongside the narrative deepen the scene by teaching trust, patience, justice, and aged testimony. The day is about more than royal succession; it is about faithfulness across generations.
In covenant context, David's charge to Solomon is centered on obedience to the law of the LORD. The stability of the throne is not secured by political skill alone. Solomon must walk in God's ways, keep His statutes, and rule with discernment. At the same time, unresolved matters from David's reign require sober judgment. Leadership transition involves both hope and hard decisions.
Psalms 37, 71, and 94 frame the narrative with trust in God's justice. The faithful are warned not to envy evildoers, the aged servant asks not to be forsaken, and the LORD is praised as the one who will not cast off His people. These psalms remind Israel that the kingdom does not depend finally on the strength of an aging David or the promise of a young Solomon. The LORD remains the refuge and judge.
Jesus is the Son of David who keeps the law perfectly and reigns with pure justice. He receives a kingdom not through grasping ambition, but through obedience, suffering, resurrection, and the Father's appointment. He is the King whom older believers can proclaim to the next generation, and He is the righteous judge who secures the inheritance of His people.
In daily life, this reading calls believers to obey God during transitions rather than letting uncertainty excuse compromise. Character grows when people finish faithfully, receive responsibility humbly, and pass on wisdom without bitterness. Families can honor elders while discipling the young, workplaces can handle leadership changes with integrity, and churches can proclaim God's faithfulness from one generation to another under the reign of Christ.
In U.S. civic life, this passage forms the virtue of generational faithfulness. It turns our prayers toward aging believers, new leaders, families in transition, and institutions facing questions of justice and continuity. Christians should show up by passing on faith with humility, courage, and confidence in God's righteous rule.

⁵ Who [is] like unto the LORD our God, who dwelleth on high,
⁶ Who humbleth [himself] to behold [the things that are] in heaven, and in the earth!
⁷ He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, [and] lifteth the needy out of the dunghill;
⁸ That he may set [him] with princes, [even] with the princes of his people.
⁹ He maketh the barren woman to keep house, [and to be] a joyful mother of children. Praise ye the LORD.
Psalm 114

² Judah was his sanctuary, [and] Israel his dominion.
³ The sea saw [it], and fled: Jordan was driven back.
⁴ The mountains skipped like rams, [and] the little hills like lambs.
⁵ What [ailed] thee, O thou sea, that thou fleddest? thou Jordan, [that] thou wast driven back?
⁶ Ye mountains, [that] ye skipped like rams; [and] ye little hills, like lambs?
⁷ Tremble, thou earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob;
⁸ Which turned the rock [into] a standing water, the flint into a fountain of waters.
Psalm 115
¹ Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but unto thy name give glory, for thy mercy, [and] for thy truth’s sake.
² Wherefore should the heathen say, Where [is] now their God?
³ But our God [is] in the heavens: he hath done whatsoever he hath pleased.
⁴ Their idols [are] silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.
⁵ They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes have they, but they see not:
⁶ They have ears, but they hear not: noses have they, but they smell not:
⁷ They have hands, but they handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neither speak they through their throat.
⁸ They that make them are like unto them; [so is] every one that trusteth in them.
⁹ O Israel, trust thou in the LORD: he [is] their help and their shield.
¹⁰ O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD: he [is] their help and their shield.
¹¹ Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: he [is] their help and their shield.
¹² The LORD hath been mindful of us: he will bless [us]; he will bless the house of Israel; he will bless the house of Aaron.
¹³ He will bless them that fear the LORD, [both] small and great.
¹⁴ The LORD shall increase you more and more, you and your children.
¹⁵ Ye [are] blessed of the LORD which made heaven and earth.
¹⁶ The heaven, [even] the heavens, [are] the LORD’S: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.
¹⁷ The dead praise not the LORD, neither any that go down into silence.
¹⁸ But we will bless the LORD from this time forth and for evermore. Praise the LORD.
Psalm 116
¹ I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice [and] my supplications.
² Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon [him] as long as I live.
³ The sorrows of death compassed me, and the pains of hell gat hold upon me: I found trouble and sorrow.
⁴ Then called I upon the name of the LORD; O LORD, I beseech thee, deliver my soul.
⁵ Gracious [is] the LORD, and righteous; yea, our God [is] merciful.
⁶ The LORD preserveth the simple: I was brought low, and he helped me.
⁷ Return unto thy rest, O my soul; for the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee.
⁸ For thou hast delivered my soul from death, mine eyes from tears, [and] my feet from falling.
⁹ I will walk before the LORD in the land of the living.
¹⁰ I believed, therefore have I spoken: I was greatly afflicted:
¹¹ I said in my haste, All men [are] liars.
¹² What shall I render unto the LORD [for] all his benefits toward me?
¹³ I will take the cup of salvation, and call upon the name of the LORD.
¹⁴ I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people.
¹⁵ Precious in the sight of the LORD [is] the death of his saints.
¹⁶ O LORD, truly I [am] thy servant; I [am] thy servant, [and] the son of thine handmaid: thou hast loosed my bonds.
¹⁷ I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the LORD.
¹⁸ I will pay my vows unto the LORD now in the presence of all his people,
¹⁹ In the courts of the LORD’S house, in the midst of thee, O Jerusalem. Praise ye the LORD.
Psalm 117
¹ O praise the LORD, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people.
² For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the LORD [endureth] for ever. Praise ye the LORD.
Psalm 118
¹ O give thanks unto the LORD; for [he is] good: because his mercy [endureth] for ever.
² Let Israel now say, that his mercy [endureth] for ever.
³ Let the house of Aaron now say, that his mercy [endureth] for ever.
⁴ Let them now that fear the LORD say, that his mercy [endureth] for ever.
⁵ I called upon the LORD in distress: the LORD answered me, [and set me] in a large place.
⁶ The LORD [is] on my side; I will not fear: what can man do unto me?
⁷ The LORD taketh my part with them that help me: therefore shall I see [my desire] upon them that hate me.
⁸ [It is] better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.
⁹ [It is] better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.
¹⁰ All nations compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD will I destroy them.
¹¹ They compassed me about; yea, they compassed me about: but in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.
¹² They compassed me about like bees; they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the name of the LORD I will destroy them.
¹³ Thou hast thrust sore at me that I might fall: but the LORD helped me.
¹⁴ The LORD [is] my strength and song, and is become my salvation.
¹⁵ The voice of rejoicing and salvation [is] in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly.
¹⁶ The right hand of the LORD is exalted: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly.
¹⁷ I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD.
¹⁸ The LORD hath chastened me sore: but he hath not given me over unto death.
¹⁹ Open to me the gates of righteousness: I will go into them, [and] I will praise the LORD:
²⁰ This gate of the LORD, into which the righteous shall enter.
²¹ I will praise thee: for thou hast heard me, and art become my salvation.
²² The stone [which] the builders refused is become the head [stone] of the corner.
²³ This is the LORD’S doing; it [is] marvellous in our eyes.
²⁴ This [is] the day [which] the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
²⁵ Save now, I beseech thee, O LORD: O LORD, I beseech thee, send now prosperity.
²⁶ Blessed [be] he that cometh in the name of the LORD: we have blessed you out of the house of the LORD.
²⁷ God [is] the LORD, which hath shewed us light: bind the sacrifice with cords, [even] unto the horns of the altar.
²⁸ Thou [art] my God, and I will praise thee: [thou art] my God, I will exalt thee.
²⁹ O give thanks unto the LORD; for [he is] good: for his mercy [endureth] for ever.
DEVOTIONAL:
Psalms 111-118 form a rich collection of praise, wisdom, deliverance, and thanksgiving. They celebrate the LORD's works, the fear of the LORD, compassion for the poor, the mercy that endures for ever, and the song of the saved who declare that the LORD is their strength. The movement rises toward the rejected stone becoming the head of the corner, a line that gathers suffering, reversal, and divine triumph into one image.
In Israel's worship, remembering was an act of covenant faithfulness. The people were to study the works of the LORD, delight in His commandments, praise His name from sunrise to sunset, and trust Him more than princes. Praise was not shallow optimism. It was a disciplined response to God's acts in history. The God who brought deliverance deserves thanksgiving that forms the moral imagination of His people.
These psalms also give dignity to the lowly. The LORD raises the poor out of the dust, helps His people in distress, and surrounds the righteous with mercy. The Passover setting often associated with these songs gives the praise added depth: Israel sings as a rescued people. Mercy is not a vague mood; it is remembered deliverance that teaches the people how to live with gratitude and courage.
Jesus identifies Himself with the rejected stone. Human builders reject Him, but the LORD makes Him the cornerstone of salvation. Through His death and resurrection, the gate of righteousness is opened, and the song of deliverance becomes the church's praise. The Hallel finds its fullest voice in the Messiah who was cast aside and exalted by God.
In daily life, this passage calls believers to obey God with thankful fear and durable praise. Character is formed when remembering God's works becomes stronger than resentment or despair. Families can tell stories of deliverance, workers can hope when overlooked or rejected, and churches can proclaim the risen cornerstone with joy that serves the lowly and trusts the Lord more than human power.
In U.S. civic life, the civic virtue rising from this reading is thankful perseverance. It leads us to pray for people who feel cast aside, congregations needing renewed praise, and communities longing for mercy after hardship. Christians should show up by giving thanks openly and honoring the rejected Christ through patient, joyful faithfulness.

SCRIPTURE:
First Chronicles 26
¹ Concerning the divisions of the porters: Of the Korhites [was] Meshelemiah the son of Kore, of the sons of Asaph.
² And the sons of Meshelemiah [were], Zechariah the firstborn, Jediael the second, Zebadiah the third, Jathniel the fourth,
³ Elam the fifth, Jehohanan the sixth, Elioenai the seventh.
⁴ Moreover the sons of Obededom [were], Shemaiah the firstborn, Jehozabad the second, Joah the third, and Sacar the fourth, and Nethaneel the fifth,
⁵ Ammiel the sixth, Issachar the seventh, Peulthai the eighth: for God blessed him.
⁶ Also unto Shemaiah his son were sons born, that ruled throughout the house of their father: for they [were] mighty men of valour.
⁷ The sons of Shemaiah; Othni, and Rephael, and Obed, Elzabad, whose brethren [were] strong men, Elihu, and Semachiah.
⁸ All these of the sons of Obededom: they and their sons and their brethren, able men for strength for the service, [were] threescore and two of Obededom.
⁹ And Meshelemiah had sons and brethren, strong men, eighteen.
¹⁰ Also Hosah, of the children of Merari, had sons; Simri the chief, (for [though] he was not the firstborn, yet his father made him the chief;)
¹¹ Hilkiah the second, Tebaliah the third, Zechariah the fourth: all the sons and brethren of Hosah [were] thirteen.
¹² Among these [were] the divisions of the porters, [even] among the chief men, [having] wards one against another, to minister in the house of the LORD.
¹³ And they cast lots, as well the small as the great, according to the house of their fathers, for every gate.
¹⁴ And the lot eastward fell to Shelemiah. Then for Zechariah his son, a wise counseller, they cast lots; and his lot came out northward.
¹⁵ To Obededom southward; and to his sons the house of Asuppim.
¹⁶ To Shuppim and Hosah [the lot came forth] westward, with the gate Shallecheth, by the causeway of the going up, ward against ward.
¹⁷ Eastward [were] six Levites, northward four a day, southward four a day, and toward Asuppim two [and] two.
¹⁸ At Parbar westward, four at the causeway, [and] two at Parbar.
¹⁹ These [are] the divisions of the porters among the sons of Kore, and among the sons of Merari.
²⁰ And of the Levites, Ahijah [was] over the treasures of the house of God, and over the treasures of the dedicated things.
²¹ [As concerning] the sons of Laadan; the sons of the Gershonite Laadan, chief fathers, [even] of Laadan the Gershonite, [were] Jehieli.
²² The sons of Jehieli; Zetham, and Joel his brother, [which were] over the treasures of the house of the LORD.
²³ Of the Amramites, [and] the Izharites, the Hebronites, [and] the Uzzielites:
²⁴ And Shebuel the son of Gershom, the son of Moses, [was] ruler of the treasures.
²⁵ And his brethren by Eliezer; Rehabiah his son, and Jeshaiah his son, and Joram his son, and Zichri his son, and Shelomith his son.
²⁶ Which Shelomith and his brethren [were] over all the treasures of the dedicated things, which David the king, and the chief fathers, the captains over thousands and hundreds, and the captains of the host, had dedicated.
²⁷ Out of the spoils won in battles did they dedicate to maintain the house of the LORD.
²⁸ And all that Samuel the seer, and Saul the son of Kish, and Abner the son of Ner, and Joab the son of Zeruiah, had dedicated; [and] whosoever had dedicated [any thing, it was] under the hand of Shelomith, and of his brethren.
²⁹ Of the Izharites, Chenaniah and his sons [were] for the outward business over Israel, for officers and judges.
³⁰ [And] of the Hebronites, Hashabiah and his brethren, men of valour, a thousand and seven hundred, [were] officers among them of Israel on this side Jordan westward in all the business of the LORD, and in the service of the king.
³¹ Among the Hebronites [was] Jerijah the chief, [even] among the Hebronites, according to the generations of his fathers. In the fortieth year of the reign of David they were sought for, and there were found among them mighty men of valour at Jazer of Gilead.
³² And his brethren, men of valour, [were] two thousand and seven hundred chief fathers, whom king David made rulers over the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh, for every matter pertaining to God, and affairs of the king.
First Chronicles 27
¹ Now the children of Israel after their number, [to wit], the chief fathers and captains of thousands and hundreds, and their officers that served the king in any matter of the courses, which came in and went out month by month throughout all the months of the year, of every course [were] twenty and four thousand.
² Over the first course for the first month [was] Jashobeam the son of Zabdiel: and in his course [were] twenty and four thousand.
³ Of the children of Perez [was] the chief of all the captains of the host for the first month.

⁵ The third captain of the host for the third month [was] Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, a chief priest: and in his course [were] twenty and four thousand.
⁶ This [is that] Benaiah, [who was] mighty [among] the thirty, and above the thirty: and in his course [was] Ammizabad his son.
⁷ The fourth [captain] for the fourth month [was] Asahel the brother of Joab, and Zebadiah his son after him: and in his course [were] twenty and four thousand.
⁸ The fifth captain for the fifth month [was] Shamhuth the Izrahite: and in his course [were] twenty and four thousand.

¹⁵ The twelfth [captain] for the twelfth month [was] Heldai the Netophathite, of Othniel: and in his course [were] twenty and four thousand.
¹⁶ Furthermore over the tribes of Israel: the ruler of the Reubenites [was] Eliezer the son of Zichri: of the Simeonites, Shephatiah the son of Maachah:
¹⁷ Of the Levites, Hashabiah the son of Kemuel: of the Aaronites, Zadok:
¹⁸ Of Judah, Elihu, [one] of the brethren of David: of Issachar, Omri the son of Michael:
¹⁹ Of Zebulun, Ishmaiah the son of Obadiah: of Naphtali, Jerimoth the son of Azriel:
²⁰ Of the children of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Azaziah: of the half tribe of Manasseh, Joel the son of Pedaiah:
²¹ Of the half [tribe] of Manasseh in Gilead, Iddo the son of Zechariah: of Benjamin, Jaasiel the son of Abner:
²² Of Dan, Azareel the son of Jeroham. These [were] the princes of the tribes of Israel.
²³ But David took not the number of them from twenty years old and under: because the LORD had said he would increase Israel like to the stars of the heavens.
²⁴ Joab the son of Zeruiah began to number, but he finished not, because there fell wrath for it against Israel; neither was the number put in the account of the chronicles of king David.
²⁵ And over the king’s treasures [was] Azmaveth the son of Adiel: and over the storehouses in the fields, in the cities, and in the villages, and in the castles, [was] Jehonathan the son of Uzziah:
²⁶ And over them that did the work of the field for tillage of the ground [was] Ezri the son of Chelub:
²⁷ And over the vineyards [was] Shimei the Ramathite: over the increase of the vineyards for the wine cellars [was] Zabdi the Shiphmite:

³⁰ Over the camels also [was] Obil the Ishmaelite: and over the asses [was] Jehdeiah the Meronothite:
³¹ And over the flocks [was] Jaziz the Hagerite. All these [were] the rulers of the substance which [was] king David’s.
³² Also Jonathan David’s uncle was a counseller, a wise man, and a scribe: and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni [was] with the king’s sons:
³³ And Ahithophel [was] the king’s counseller: and Hushai the Archite [was] the king’s companion:
³⁴ And after Ahithophel [was] Jehoiada the son of Benaiah, and Abiathar: and the general of the king’s army [was] Joab.
First Chronicles 28
¹ And David assembled all the princes of Israel, the princes of the tribes, and the captains of the companies that ministered to the king by course, and the captains over the thousands, and captains over the hundreds, and the stewards over all the substance and possession of the king, and of his sons, with the officers, and with the mighty men, and with all the valiant men, unto Jerusalem.
² Then David the king stood up upon his feet, and said, Hear me, my brethren, and my people: [As for me], I [had] in mine heart to build an house of rest for the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and for the footstool of our God, and had made ready for the building:
³ But God said unto me, Thou shalt not build an house for my name, because thou [hast been] a man of war, and hast shed blood.
⁴ Howbeit the LORD God of Israel chose me before all the house of my father to be king over Israel for ever: for he hath chosen Judah [to be] the ruler; and of the house of Judah, the house of my father; and among the sons of my father he liked me to make [me] king over all Israel:
⁵ And of all my sons, (for the LORD hath given me many sons,) he hath chosen Solomon my son to sit upon the throne of the kingdom of the LORD over Israel.
⁶ And he said unto me, Solomon thy son, he shall build my house and my courts: for I have chosen him [to be] my son, and I will be his father.
⁷ Moreover I will establish his kingdom for ever, if he be constant to do my commandments and my judgments, as at this day.
⁸ Now therefore in the sight of all Israel the congregation of the LORD, and in the audience of our God, keep and seek for all the commandments of the LORD your God: that ye may possess this good land, and leave [it] for an inheritance for your children after you for ever.
⁹ And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father, and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind: for the LORD searcheth all hearts, and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts: if thou seek him, he will be found of thee; but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.
¹⁰ Take heed now; for the LORD hath chosen thee to build an house for the sanctuary: be strong, and do [it].
¹¹ Then David gave to Solomon his son the pattern of the porch, and of the houses thereof, and of the treasuries thereof, and of the upper chambers thereof, and of the inner parlours thereof, and of the place of the mercy seat,
¹² And the pattern of all that he had by the spirit, of the courts of the house of the LORD, and of all the chambers round about, of the treasuries of the house of God, and of the treasuries of the dedicated things:
¹³ Also for the courses of the priests and the Levites, and for all the work of the service of the house of the LORD, and for all the vessels of service in the house of the LORD.
¹⁴ [He gave] of gold by weight for [things] of gold, for all instruments of all manner of service; [silver also] for all instruments of silver by weight, for all instruments of every kind of service:
¹⁵ Even the weight for the candlesticks of gold, and for their lamps of gold, by weight for every candlestick, and for the lamps thereof: and for the candlesticks of silver by weight, [both] for the candlestick, and [also] for the lamps thereof, according to the use of every candlestick.
¹⁶ And by weight [he gave] gold for the tables of shewbread, for every table; and [likewise] silver for the tables of silver:
¹⁷ Also pure gold for the fleshhooks, and the bowls, and the cups: and for the golden basons [he gave gold] by weight for every bason; and [likewise silver] by weight for every bason of silver:
¹⁸ And for the altar of incense refined gold by weight; and gold for the pattern of the chariot of the cherubims, that spread out [their wings], and covered the ark of the covenant of the LORD.
¹⁹ All [this, said David], the LORD made me understand in writing by [his] hand upon me, [even] all the works of this pattern.
²⁰ And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do [it]: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, [even] my God, [will be] with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD.
²¹ And, behold, the courses of the priests and the Levites, [even they shall be with thee] for all the service of the house of God: and [there shall be] with thee for all manner of workmanship every willing skilful man, for any manner of service: also the princes and all the people [will be] wholly at thy commandment.
First Chronicles 29
¹ Furthermore David the king said unto all the congregation, Solomon my son, whom alone God hath chosen, [is yet] young and tender, and the work [is] great: for the palace [is] not for man, but for the LORD God.
² Now I have prepared with all my might for the house of my God the gold for [things to be made] of gold, and the silver for [things] of silver, and the brass for [things] of brass, the iron for [things] of iron, and wood for [things] of wood; onyx stones, and [stones] to be set, glistering stones, and of divers colours, and all manner of precious stones, and marble stones in abundance.
³ Moreover, because I have set my affection to the house of my God, I have of mine own proper good, of gold and silver, [which] I have given to the house of my God, over and above all that I have prepared for the holy house,
⁴ [Even] three thousand talents of gold, of the gold of Ophir, and seven thousand talents of refined silver, to overlay the walls of the houses [withal]:
⁵ The gold for [things] of gold, and the silver for [things] of silver, and for all manner of work [to be made] by the hands of artificers. And who [then] is willing to consecrate his service this day unto the LORD?
⁶ Then the chief of the fathers and princes of the tribes of Israel, and the captains of thousands and of hundreds, with the rulers of the king’s work, offered willingly,
⁷ And gave for the service of the house of God of gold five thousand talents and ten thousand drams, and of silver ten thousand talents, and of brass eighteen thousand talents, and one hundred thousand talents of iron.
⁸ And they with whom [precious] stones were found gave [them] to the treasure of the house of the LORD, by the hand of Jehiel the Gershonite.
⁹ Then the people rejoiced, for that they offered willingly, because with perfect heart they offered willingly to the LORD: and David the king also rejoiced with great joy.
¹⁰ Wherefore David blessed the LORD before all the congregation: and David said, Blessed [be] thou, LORD God of Israel our father, for ever and ever.
¹¹ Thine, O LORD, [is] the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all [that is] in the heaven and in the earth [is thine]; thine [is] the kingdom, O LORD, and thou art exalted as head above all.
¹² Both riches and honour [come] of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand [is] power and might; and in thine hand [it is] to make great, and to give strength unto all.
¹³ Now therefore, our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name.
¹⁴ But who [am] I, and what [is] my people, that we should be able to offer so willingly after this sort? for all things [come] of thee, and of thine own have we given thee.
¹⁵ For we [are] strangers before thee, and sojourners, as [were] all our fathers: our days on the earth [are] as a shadow, and [there is] none abiding.
¹⁶ O LORD our God, all this store that we have prepared to build thee an house for thine holy name [cometh] of thine hand, and [is] all thine own.
¹⁷ I know also, my God, that thou triest the heart, and hast pleasure in uprightness. As for me, in the uprightness of mine heart I have willingly offered all these things: and now have I seen with joy thy people, which are present here, to offer willingly unto thee.
¹⁸ O LORD God of Abraham, Isaac, and of Israel, our fathers, keep this for ever in the imagination of the thoughts of the heart of thy people, and prepare their heart unto thee:
¹⁹ And give unto Solomon my son a perfect heart, to keep thy commandments, thy testimonies, and thy statutes, and to do all [these things], and to build the palace, [for] the which I have made provision.
²⁰ And David said to all the congregation, Now bless the LORD your God. And all the congregation blessed the LORD God of their fathers, and bowed down their heads, and worshipped the LORD, and the king.
²¹ And they sacrificed sacrifices unto the LORD, and offered burnt offerings unto the LORD, on the morrow after that day, [even] a thousand bullocks, a thousand rams, [and] a thousand lambs, with their drink offerings, and sacrifices in abundance for all Israel:
²² And did eat and drink before the LORD on that day with great gladness. And they made Solomon the son of David king the second time, and anointed [him] unto the LORD [to be] the chief governor, and Zadok [to be] priest.
²³ Then Solomon sat on the throne of the LORD as king instead of David his father, and prospered; and all Israel obeyed him.
²⁴ And all the princes, and the mighty men, and all the sons likewise of king David, submitted themselves unto Solomon the king.
²⁵ And the LORD magnified Solomon exceedingly in the sight of all Israel, and bestowed upon him [such] royal majesty as had not been on any king before him in Israel.
²⁶ Thus David the son of Jesse reigned over all Israel.
²⁷ And the time that he reigned over Israel [was] forty years; seven years reigned he in Hebron, and thirty and three [years] reigned he in Jerusalem.
²⁸ And he died in a good old age, full of days, riches, and honour: and Solomon his son reigned in his stead.
²⁹ Now the acts of David the king, first and last, behold, they [are] written in the book of Samuel the seer, and in the book of Nathan the prophet, and in the book of Gad the seer,
³⁰ With all his reign and his might, and the times that went over him, and over Israel, and over all the kingdoms of the countries.
Psalm 127
¹ A Song of degrees for Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh [but] in vain.
² [It is] vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: [for] so he giveth his beloved sleep.
³ Lo, children [are] an heritage of the LORD: [and] the fruit of the womb [is his] reward.
⁴ As arrows [are] in the hand of a mighty man; so [are] children of the youth.
⁵ Happy [is] the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.
DEVOTIONAL:
David's final preparations are marked by organization, generosity, public charge, and prayer. He cannot build the temple himself, but he does not withdraw into disappointment. He prepares Solomon, gathers leaders, assigns responsibilities, gives from his own treasure, and leads the people in willing offering. Psalm 127 provides the theological center: unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain.
In covenant perspective, this is a scene of succession and stewardship. David understands that the work of God extends beyond his own lifetime. The kingdom must be handed forward with resources, instruction, courage, and dependence on the LORD. The people give willingly because David's prayer reminds them that all things come from God. Their generosity is not a transaction; it is returning what His hand has already provided.
The passage also emphasizes wholeheartedness. David charges Solomon to know the God of his father and serve Him with a perfect heart and willing mind. Temple materials matter, but the heart matters more. Leadership transition is not merely administrative. It is spiritual, requiring worship, courage, obedience, and the recognition that God searches every imagination of the thoughts.
Jesus is the true Son who builds the house of God. He gathers living stones, establishes a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and teaches His servants that fruitful labor depends on the Father's grace. He also models generational faithfulness, entrusting His mission to disciples and sending the Spirit to empower their work. In Him, building and dependence are joined.
In daily life, this reading calls believers to obey God by preparing others rather than clinging to control. Character grows through generosity, encouragement, and willingness to serve a future we may not personally see. Families can pass on faith through prayer and example, workplaces can mentor successors with integrity, and churches can build for Christ by equipping the next generation while confessing that the Lord alone makes labor fruitful.
In U.S. civic life, this Scripture calls for generous stewardship. It gives us a current prayer focus in parents, mentors, elders, and leaders preparing the next generation for faithful service. Christians should show up by giving freely, planning wisely, and admitting that every good outcome depends on the Lord.
